How are dental implants installed?

Are you thinking about dental implants and wondering about the process? The treatment is done in five steps, as detailed below.

Evaluation of your dentition

The first step is the evaluation of your needs and the analysis of the bone structures of your gums. At Clinique dentaire St-Onge de La Prairie, we use cutting-edge technologies such as bone scans, digital impressions, and smile photos.

The dental surgeon will take x-rays of the teeth, jaw, and head to learn about the positioning of the teeth, jaw occlusion, and the aesthetics of the smile. All of this is for an optimal result, to your complete satisfaction.

In cases where bone structures are insufficient to receive implants, the possibility of bone grafting is considered.

The duration and cost of the treatment will be determined at the end of the evaluation.

Root implantation

The second step involves surgery to fix the dental implants. This procedure is performed with a local anaesthetic. After the implant has been inserted into the alveolar bone, an implant abutment is attached to the alveolar bone in preparation for receiving the prosthesis.

The duration of the procedure depends on the number of implants to be placed and the amount of bone in your jaw.

Healing

After the operation comes the healing stage, or osseointegration (fusion of the implant with the jawbone). The root has been placed, but the prosthesis has not yet been. During this 4 to 6 month phase, it is possible to fit temporary prostheses for aesthetic reasons.

The fitting of prostheses

Now it’s time to make the permanent prostheses and fit them. This step is not a surgical procedure, since it is simply a matter of aiming the prosthesis into the root that has already been placed.

Follow-up and professional care

Follow-up visits will be scheduled during the year after the placement of the implants to ensure that the implants are functioning properly.

Replacement teeth have a natural appearance and function like real teeth. And like natural teeth, implants must be cleaned with a toothbrush and dental floss!
